Rotations
Rotations define how on-call shifts are distributed among team members over time.
What is a Rotation?
A rotation is a repeating pattern of on-call assignments. For example:
- Weekly rotations where each person is on-call for one week
- 24-hour shifts rotating among team members
Creating a Rotation
- Navigate to Rotations from the sidebar
- Click Add Rotation
- Configure the rotation:
- Title: Name your rotation (e.g., "Backend Team Weekly")
- Description: Optional details about this rotation
- Frequency Unit: Select the unit by which shifts cycle
- Frequency Length: Select how often shifts cycle
- Start Date: When the rotation begins
- Participants: Who is included in the rotation
Rotation Types
Weekly Rotation
Each participant is on-call for one full week, starting on a specified day.
Example: Alice (Week 1) → Bob (Week 2) → Carol (Week 3) → repeat
Daily Rotation
Participants rotate daily at a specified time.
Example: Alice (Monday) → Bob (Tuesday) → Carol (Wednesday) → repeat
Custom Rotation
Define your own rotation pattern with specific start/end times and durations.
Adding Participants
After creating a rotation:
- Open the rotation details
- Select the participant type — either individual users or a team
- Add participants from the dropdown
- Set the order (who goes first, second, etc.) by dragging and dropping once selected.
- Click "Save"
The rotation will automatically cycle through participants in order.
Individual Users vs Teams
A rotation supports either individual users or a team as participants — not both at the same time:
- Individual users — each person takes a shift in the defined order
- Team — the team as a whole takes each shift; all team members are notified when the team's shift is active
Choose the participant type when setting up the rotation. See Teams for how to create and manage teams.
Best Practices
- Balanced shifts: Distribute on-call time fairly across the team
- Clear handoffs: Ensure smooth transitions between shifts
- Document expectations: Use descriptions to clarify responsibilities
- Regular review: Adjust rotations as team size changes
Attaching to Integrations
Rotations must be attached to integrations to receive alerts. See Integrations for details.
Deleting a Rotation
To remove a rotation:
- Open the rotation list
- Select the rotation
- Click Delete in the bottom action bar
- Confirm deletion
Warning: This removes the rotation from all attached integrations.
